Steam allows visiting community forums, trading virtual goods via Steam Community Market, publishing mods using Steam Workshop, using Steam Cloud save features, as well as playing networked multiplayer games protected from cheating by Valve Anti-Cheat.
Gaming enthusiasts, as well as small, independent and large software developers, use Steam to buy, play, receive updates for, and distribute interactive games and applications. Steamworks API may also be used to provide DRM protection and server hosting. The platform went live on September 12, 2003.
Steam dominates the global PC digital game distribution industry with a 74–75 percent share, while its customer count amounts to some 200 million monthly unique accounts, with over 43 million players online at once at peak load.
