About PayPal

PayPal is a fintech company operating a digital payment system in the United States. PayPal has offices in San Jose, California. The term refers to payment and pal, which means friend in English.

The history of PayPal goes back to 1998 when a company called Confinity was founded by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek, Ken Howery, and Elon Musk. After the merger with Elon Musk's venture X.com, the IPO, and acquisition by eBay in 2000-2002, PayPal separated from eBay in 2015, becoming a publicly held corporation with NASDAQ-listed stock PYPL.

Purpose

To facilitate the transfer and receipt of money online, as well as serve as an electronic equivalent of the conventional way of making transactions.

Service/offer

PayPal provides consumer payments online; merchant, consumer, and B2B payments in many countries. These services are provided by PayPal Payment Services, Venmo (mobile payment platform), Braintree (digital payments solution), Xoom (global payment service for sending money overseas), PayPal Credit Card Financing, and PayPal Honey (shopping platform).

Revenue streams

PayPal generates income by charging transaction fees from consumers and merchants, as well as fees on cross-border payments and currency exchange. Its operations go far beyond American borders, involving various currency exchanges around the world. The distinctive features of PayPal are the early development of mainstream web-based digital wallets, its connection to eBay, and the acquisition of fintech companies such as Venmo and Braintree.
