About Guardian Project
Guardian Project is a global network that develops mobile applications designed to provide security and privacy on mobile devices. It was established in 2009 in Brooklyn, NY, by Nathan Freitas as an independent, not-for-profit group. Guardian Project focuses on developing mobile software solutions and enhancements to OSs that provide greater safety for people.
The collective’s online presence allows visitors to learn about resources where they can find software repositories and development portals. These include Orbot, a secure, Tor-enabled virtual private network for use on Android or iOS devices, and Checkey, a utility app, among other applications. The group has developed more than a dozen mobile applications during its more than ten years of work.
These software tools are used not only by regular people but also by journalists and activists who find themselves in unsafe surveillance conditions. They use the tools to secure their communications.
