About DocumentCloud
DocumentCloud is an example of open-source software as a service (SaaS) operated by a nongovernmental organization called Investigative Reporters and Editors. It was launched in 2009 as a project funded by a Knight News Challenge award won by journalists from ProPublica and The New York Times. Over the years, DocumentCloud has grown into a repository containing millions of documents submitted by users.
Visitors to the platform can upload, explore, analyze, edit, collaborate on, and publish documents. Features such as OCR, entity extraction, language support, a mobile viewer, and faceted search are designed to enable users to work with documents structurally and support further work with them.
DocumentCloud is used by investigative journalists who need to publish materials gathered during their reporting and make their source documents available. The largest newsrooms have used DocumentCloud in connection with large-scale investigations such as the Panama Papers leaks, WikiLeaks, and the Snowden documents.
