About Dictionary.com

Dictionary.com is a digital publisher whose primary mission is to provide an electronic dictionary and serve as a major linguistic resource. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of IXL Learning. Dictionary.com allows visitors to look up definitions in its primary proprietary dictionary, which is based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary and includes entries from the Collins English Dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary.

The site also features sections such as Word of the Day, Crossword Solver, Pop Culture Dictionary, emojis, and slang. Users can search for synonyms, a word’s etymology, and idioms.

Dictionary.com is used by college and high school students, teachers, and people interested in linguistic studies. It was developed by Brian Kariger and Daniel Fierro on May 14, 1995, at Lexico Publishing. The site was initially one of the few web sources with an extensive reference section and has since handled billions of word queries per year.
